Went Bridge Flood Defence

Elevating the riverbank of the River Don at the Went Bridge tributary. The work was carried out to lower the risk of the river breaking its banks as the area had been flooded multiple times in recent years.

Levels were raised using imported clay, installed with the assistance of Trimble GPS and compacted with a 13t sheepsfoot roller. The newly installed bund was complete with a Grasscrete track for vehicular access.

The works have subsequently been tested with heavy rainfalls and have stood up to the challenge!

Based in North Yorkshire, this large project was split into two locations. Location one, the busy A171 coastal road to Whitby, a new centre lane installed for traffic exiting the “A” road along with a full verge drainage system and conservation kerbs in place. All “in keeping” with the North York Moors National Park requirements.

Location two, 2 miles outside the village of Egton, a new access entrance. Works involved topsoil strip, excavation of subsoil to formation and installation of both 6F5 Capping and Type 1 Subbase to the road box using Trimble GPS equipment. A new swale was installed running parallel to the entrance along with headwalls, check dams, filter drain and carriageway gullies to cover all aspects of water egress.

After stripping the topsoil from this site in Redcar, we carried out the cut/fill to our GPS model using state-of-the-art 3D Machine Control technology. We excavated made ground from the building area and re-engineered it back in 200mm layers as per Principle Designers specifications. We then used the material cut from the roads/car park to fill the sports pitches, then installed and compacted stone ready for the groundworks to commence.

This project in Manchester began with the removal of an unused underground tank, which we reduced using a 40t CAT excavator with a muncher attached. The concrete was loaded onto wagons and the contents of the tank were cleaned out and taken offsite by tanker. Stone was then installed and compacted in layers up to ground level.

Our second visit was after the new building had been erected, to do the final trim in preparation for the concrete floor installation. This was done using a CAT D4 Bulldozer with the help of 2 Topcon lasers and Trimble receivers.

MWS Contracts were instructed to carry out the site set up for this job near Wetherby, North Yorkshire. We stripped the topsoil and installed a new stone access road. We then levelled up the field using lasers and receivers on the bulldozer to create a pad for the building to be erected on. The site was covered in 200mm of stone and compacted.
